KARACHI: An 18-year-old girl Bakhtawar was allegedly killed by her father Akhtar Hussain over ‘honour’ in the provincial capital on Monday, police officials said.
Station House Officer Sir Syed said that Bakhtawar was murdered in the North Karachi with a pair of scissors. He said that she received fatal wounds on her abdomen as a result of the attack. “The suspect later managed to escape after locking the door of the house. She was discovered later in the evening after her mother and siblings returned home from work,” he said.
He also said that the father killed the daughter because he had suspicions about her ‘character.’ The killing came weeks after popular social media celebrity and model Qandeel Baloch was killed in Multan for ‘honour.’ Her murder had sent shock waves across the country and had prompted severe criticism from all parts of the society against so-called ‘honour’ killings.
Politicians and women rights activists had also come forward and called for renewed efforts to curb the menace that has plagued the country for decades and had seen a recent upsurge.
A committee comprising lawmakers from both the lower and upper houses of the parliament unanimously approved two bills aimed at tackling ‘honour’ killings and increasing rape convictions on July 21.
